The dust jacket unfolds into a poster. The poster is a chromolithograph (c. 1900) by William Shaw Diedrich Schmidt. The birds in Schmidt's work were based on the artwork of J.G Keulemans in Walter Buller's A history of the birds of New Zealand.

Sir Walter Lawry Buller completed a revised and expanded edition of his 1873 'A history of the birds of New Zealand' in 1888. The forty-eight plates were prepared using chromolithography, an early colour-printing press.By contrast, the first edition contained thirty-five smaller hand-coloured plates. The artist for both editions was John Gerrard Keulemans. This book contains all Keulemans' colour images from the first edition. Apart from a limited-edition facsimile privately published in 1986, this is the first time the full set has been printed in colour since 1873.
